Eltham Palace Visit February 2004

Eltham Palace is one of London's lesser-known gems. It is hidden away in South East London, well off the usual tourist trail but is certainly worth a visit. Part of the building is an old 15th Century palace but the more interesting part (for me anyway) is the part that was built by the wealthy couple Stephen and Virginia Courtauld. It was built in the 1930s, about the same time as our house, and is a temple to Art Deco. The level of detail is fascinating. I particularly liked the individuality of the couple's bedrooms (they has separate rooms). Stephen Courtauld's room is functional and efficient (some may say austere and bland) whilst his wife's is opulent and extravagant. Run by English Heritage, Eltham Palace makes a nice contrast to the busy attractions of central London.
